Day 3 - A Long One

We were up early and on the road by 8 am.  Today we logged 600 km!

Check out these HUGE cross country skis at 100 Mile House!

When we decided to head up to see my sister we knew it was out of the way but it was necessary and we had a great visit.

The Cariboo is so stunning

But today we had to boot it to get to our next stop which was Nakusp.

We also wanted to travel on less busy roads and so we decided to travel to Barriere and then South to Kamloops and even from there we travelled East thru Monte Lake and Westwold.

British Columbia had experienced very bad forest fires these past few years.  While driving thru Barriere we could see the results of the fires here that happened 15 years ago.  It even jumped the river.  See from the picture above how close the burnt out trees are.

Lunch was at a cute but shockingly busy 50s diner.  Food was good, service not so much, but then again it was busy.

In Vernon - which is a fair size city - we stopped and got some groceries for the trip. Oh and we got wine because we needed to stock up on some BC wine before we leave the province.

We also picked up some cereal, almond milk, some cheese, rolls, peanut butter and orange juice.  We want to have breakfast be an easy meal for us each morning.

It is so hot out!  In Vernon it was 31 degrees!

We have travelled this route before and we just love it.  Such stunning scenery.

The province is experiencing quite a bit of flooding all over.  With our very warm weather recently snow packs are melting and the rivers are causing floods.

We notice a truck in front of us with a large load of sand bags destined to protect someone's property.

Bernie really wanted to travel back to this corner of the province.  And he especially wanted to travel on the Needles ferry over the Arrow Lake.

The ferry system here is free and part of the highway system.  It runs continually and takes only 15 minutes or so.

What a view from the ferry!

Here is a map of our route today.

We arrive in Nakusp around 5:30.  It has been a long day.

Nakusp is a beautiful city nestled in the valley surrounded by the Selkirk Mountains, the Valhalla Mountains and the Monashee Mountains.

Last night Bernie reserved us a room at the Arrow Lake Lodge.  The price was right and great location.  The room is quite small but it is very clean and will meet our needs for one night.

First stop is dinner.  Karl's Woodfire Pizza N'More is highly recommended and it did not disappoint.  We take a seat out on the patio and enjoy a cold drink.

We share a Greek Salad and a Vegetarian Pizza.

After the meal we go for a lovely walk along the lake.  Isn't it pretty.

Today we saw some unique things too:  a lama, a gopher, ground squirrels, sheep, lots of eagles/hawks, many deers, and so much more.
