Livorno Italy, Monday

We dock early and both Bernie and I are sleeping in. We don’t actually wake up until 8 am and we finally feel very rested.

Bernie heads down to get cappuccino and I write up my blog for yesterday.  Also watching the BBC news for the craziness that is happening in the world.  We find out about the terrorist attack in Las Vegas, then we hear about the attack in Edmonton, the attack we encountered in Marseilles and then the results of the Catalan referendum and the horrible way the police acted.  We feel horrible for those impacted and our thoughts go out to all those affected.

We have the Enclave passes and Bernie and I head down.  It feels amazing and Bernie is able to do his physio exercises in the pool and use the water for resistance.  But I do have to share what happened in the Enclave prior to my arrival when Bernie was in there by himself.

An older Asian gentleman was in the area and he had swimming trunks on but when he got out of the pool he dropped his trunks and went and got a towel and dried himself off.  Then put his robe on, with nothing on underneath and laid on one of the hot stone beds!  Bernie’s comment was that he can’t burn that image out of his head!  I am guessing he thought it was men only and not coed. I am also just thankful that no one came in while he was doing this that should not be there.

Around 11:30 we head ashore.  We take the shuttle to the town center of Livorno (5E per person roundtrip).  They also have a shuttle to the train station that is 12 E per person roundtrip.

here are the shuttles waiting for passengers

Once off the shuttle we wander around a bit taking notes and pictures for me as I am gathering detailed information about each port.

right across from the shuttle is a Tobacco shop that will sell train/bus tickets

While standing there Silvio the Maitre D spots Bernie and comes over to say hi and then I walk over.  We catch up with him and he insists we get in touch with him when we dine tonight.
the wine store is located right beside the Tobacco store

Note if you are wanting to go by train to Pisa or to Florence, there is a tobacco shop right across the street where you can buy your train and bus ticket.  Then just go in front of the McDonalds, facing the church and square and turn left.  Stand in front of the H & M store and catch the bus  LAM Blue to the train station there.  Runs often and is only about 5 minutes away.

where you catch the bus to the train station

There is large tourist information office here.  I get some information.  There is a company called tuscanybus.com that can take you to Pisa for 15E for adults and 10E for reduced fare for seniors/children.  It departs Livorno at 10, 12 and 1340 and leaves Pisa at 1300 1500 and 1630.  It takes about 40 minutes to get to Pisa.  This company also offers some combo tours so check out their website.

market building
lots of restaurants and stores

For us we wander to the market (that is only open until 1330 – actually most stores here close in the early afternoon until 1530 – 1630.

We wander around the market checking out stalls where you can buy pretty much everything!  We stop and get a coffee 1.30 E each (what a deal).

Outside the market there are numerous stalls selling all kinds of things.  Leather belts, purses, wallets, shoes.  Clothes, flowers, toiletries, underwear, you name it – and make sure to barter.

We cross the canal – there is a great canal tour you can take here too.

We head to a nice restaurant and order some wine, bottled sparkling water, bruschetta, a large salad and a pasta with zucchini to share.  All was very good and quite reasonable with a bill of under 30E.

We meander around some more enjoying the sites.  We wanted to pick up some wine at the store right across from the shuttle bus stop but it is still not open so we just get on the bus and return to the ship.

Lots happening on board though and lots tonight.  Tonight’s entertainment from the Patter says:  Yes No Game Show, MUTS is showing Under the Tuscan Sun, String Quartet in Vista Lounge, Italian Liqueur tasting, AJ Clarke is performing in Crooners, Production Show Sweet Soul Music, Who Sang What 50’s and 60’s, Rock and Roll party in the atrium, Phoenix Rising in the Wheelhouse Bar and Before They Were Stars Gameshow.
