Nova Scotia Getaway

We always knew we wanted to explore more of our beautiful province.  Sure we had been all around Cape Breton, including the Cabot Trail.  We had been to Halifax numerous times.  This time we are exploring the Annapolis Royal area of Nova Scotia.

Come along with us as we share our experience.

We left home early on Monday morning with the car loaded with wine (priorities), pillows (so nice to be able to travel with our own pillows), a few food items (cheeses, sliced meats, spicy pepper jelly, cereal, homemade bread, crackers and some fresh items from my garden).  We will probably eat in restaurants for most meals, but we wanted some breakfast items and some snack items to enjoy with the aforementioned wine.  Of course.

The drive is an easy one about 6 hours give or take.  We could get there faster if we took the motorways but we want to travel the old highways and travel along the water.

We only started researching this trip about ten days ago.  But because of Covid we were able to find quite a few places to stay. Although sadly many Bed and Breakfast were closed for the season.  Didn't even open for the season.  And those that were open were not serving a breakfast.

We love using Airbnb and knew that would be a good option here.  For the first three nights we wanted to stay somewhere closer to Annapolis Royal but on the water.  We ended up choosing a beautiful spot in Margaretsville that is on the water and a short drive to the sites we want to see.

Here is a link to the place we stayed at.

We hit the road just before 9 am.  Today is August 3rd and it is a holiday in most provinces, including Nova Scotia.  We notice there is actually quite a bit of traffic.  Now not crazy like we would see in Vancouver but definitely more than what we are use to.  Lots of cars, trailers, people pulling boats.  Probably a lot of people who are heading home after a long weekend.  We both comment that this is the first time we have done a road trip in our new car.  Oh we love our new Mazda CX5.

We make very good time and once we hit Truro we get off the highway and take the side roads that hug the Bay of Fundy.  Yes it is much slower but it so beautiful.  You definitely see the difference in architecture here.  A lot more regal British style homes.  This whole area was settled by the French over 400 years ago and was taken over by the British around 300 years ago.

We stop in Windsor for a bite to eat.  Which is not as easy to accomplish with Covid.  Many places are not open because of it, or are open with limited menus.  Plus with it being a holiday many places are closed today.  But we find a lovely local coffee shop and enjoy a sandwich and watch the world go by, or at least the world around Windsor Nova Scotia.

As I write this I realize there are a lot of Windsors towns/cities in the world!

A stop at the local grocery store for a few items.  Especially something for dinner as we both know that once we arrive we won't want to go out again.

Back on the road we are about an hour out from arriving at our first destination.
